Reach, impressions, and engagement are the three words you see most in Instagram analytics — and the three most often confused. Mixing them up leads to chasing the wrong goal. Here is the clean version.
Reach = unique people
Reach counts how many different accounts saw your content. If the same person sees your Reel five times, that is still a reach of one. Reach is your true audience size for a given post, and it is the number most tied to growth: new followers can only come from people you reach.
Impressions = total views
Impressions count every view, including repeats and views from different places (feed, hashtags, your profile). One person viewing your post three times is three impressions but one reach. Impressions can be much higher than reach on posts people re-watch — like a good Reel.
A big gap between impressions and reach is actually a good sign: it means people are coming back to your content. A ratio close to 1:1 means most people saw it once and moved on.
Engagement = actions taken
Engagement is anything a viewer does: likes, comments, saves, shares, profile taps, or replies. Not all engagement is equal in 2026:
- Shares — the most valuable. They put you in front of new people for free.
- Saves — a strong signal your content is useful and worth returning to.
- Comments — show real interest and keep a post active longer.
- Likes — the weakest signal, though still positive.
The number that ties them together
Engagement on its own is hard to judge — 200 actions is great for a small account and poor for a big one. So compare engagement to reach: engagement ÷ reach. This “engagement-from-reach” rate works at any follower count and tells you whether the people who see you actually care. That is the number we put front and center inside your Instagram Insights.
Which one should you grow?
Grow reach to get in front of more people, and grow engagement-from-reach to convince them. Do both and followers follow. Chasing impressions alone — or vanity likes — is how people spin their wheels for months. If you are tempted to shortcut this with bought numbers, read why buying followers hurts your growth first.
