How to Read Your Instagram Insights: A Simple 2026 Guide

June 10, 2026·6 min read·Updated July 18, 2026

Open Instagram Insights and you are met with a wall of numbers. Most people glance at their follower count and close it again. But a few of those numbers quietly tell you exactly what to post next — if you know which ones to read. This guide walks through them in plain words.

Where to find your Instagram Insights

Insights are only available on Business and Creator accounts (both are free to switch to). On your profile, tap the menu, then Insights. You can also tap View Insights under any individual post. If you do not see it, switch your account type in Settings → Account type and tools.

The numbers that actually matter

Reach

Reach is the number of unique people who saw your content. This is the single most useful growth number, because you cannot get new followers from people who never saw you. If your reach is flat, growth will be flat too — no caption tweak fixes that.

Accounts engaged

This is how many people did something — liked, saved, commented, shared, or replied. On its own it is nice to know. Compared to reach, it becomes powerful (more on that next).

Reach-to-engagement rate

Divide accounts engaged by reach. If 1,000 people saw your post and 50 did something, that is a 5% engagement-from-reach rate. This tells you whether your content convinces the people who see it. A low number means the algorithm shows your post to someone and they scroll past — so Instagram stops showing it. Fixing this matters more than posting more often.

Saves and shares

Saves and shares are worth far more than likes in 2026. A share sends your post to someone who does not follow you yet — the cleanest way to reach new people. Track which posts get shared and make more of those. See our guide on how the Instagram algorithm works for why.

Follows from a post

Some posts convert viewers into followers and some do not. The ones that do are your best templates. Repeat their format, hook, and topic.

Reach vs impressions — do not confuse them

Reach is unique people. Impressions is total views, including the same person twice. For growth, reach is the number you care about. We break the difference down fully in reach vs impressions vs engagement.

Turn the numbers into decisions

  • Low reach? Post more Reels and make the first three seconds impossible to scroll past. Reels are how accounts reach non-followers right now.
  • Good reach, low engagement? Your topic is fine but your posts do not give a reason to act. Ask a question, end on a cliffhanger, or make something save-worthy.
  • High saves? You are making reference material. Turn it into carousels and “save this for later” posts.
  • Followers not growing despite reach? Your profile is not converting. Tighten your bio and pin your three best posts.

The one habit that changes everything

Check the same three numbers — reach, engagement-from-reach, and saves — once a week, not once a day. Daily numbers are noise. Weekly trends are signal. Watching whether the trend goes up over a month tells you if your strategy is working, which a single day never can.
